“Held every three years, the Volvo Ocean Race is a round-the-world yacht race – sponsored and co-owned by the Volvo Group and Volvo Car Corporation – is the longest professional sporting event in the world.
Newport is a quaint, historic and beautiful city and one where everyone knows about sailing. But it was by far the smallest city we’ve seen host a Race Stopover. With hotel requirements from just one of dozens of sponsors (Volvo Group) of close to 500 rooms per night for three nights, we quickly outgrew Newport’s capacity and were forced to spread our guests out as far as Providence, RI. At the end of the day, we required seven hotels in three cities.
Coordinating the logistics of all of these activities – along with ground transportation between cities and events for up to 750 attendees – was one fantastic Destination Management Company – Newport Hospitality.
And in addition to the event management and logistics, Newport Hospitality worked in partnership with us as well as local community leaders to promote the race and build our brand with the local merchants and business community for at least twelve months leading up to the stopover. The result of all of that promotion was a “wow” experience for our guests and the strong consideration by Volvo Ocean Race organizers to return to Newport in the next race, scheduled for 2017-2018.
I have been involved with five Volvo Ocean Race stopovers in two countries, but none of those venues have compared in complexity to Newport. My staff, my guests and my management have all commented that this was the best stopover ever. And that is thanks to the extremely professional, energetic and well organized Newport Hospitality.
