The Passions Behind the People
Each month we will be sharing the passions behind the people in the DMC Network. This month the spotlight is on Cynthia Alford, President of Destination South, our DMC partner in Atlanta.
The memory... My husband was a bachelor until he was over 50. During our three years of dating, we never talked about getting married until I hosted a big outdoor soiree to celebrate his 50th birthday. After the birthday cake was cut and “Happy Birthday” was sung, he took my hand and led me to a bench overlooking the beautiful skyline of our neighbourhood, Midtown Atlanta. Once we were seated, he looked at me and said, “For my 50th birthday, I’d like you to give me a really big gift”. The audacity! You can imagine what was going through my head. This party WAS his birthday present. Thankfully I didn’t say what I was thinking before he finished . . . “That gift is for you to say you will marry me and spend the rest of your life with me”.
The hobby... Discovering new things like wines, bourbons, travel destinations and books. Preferably all at the same time.
The time of day... Sunset – especially when at the beach.
The vice... Trying to do too much and never feeling that I’ve accomplished enough. I can complete 30 items on my to do list and still focus on the five things I didn’t. Sometimes, I’m so far behind in the rat race that I think I’m in first place.
The virtue... Always looking for and believing the best in people.
The color... Blue. Although everyone who knows me well thinks it’s red because I’m an avid – make that obnoxious - University of Georgia Bulldog fan.
My pet... My Beagle, Benedict, who also served 13 years as the Chief of Security for Destination South Meetings & Events. Coincidentally, I named him Benedict without knowing that Saint Benedict is the Patron Saint of Hospitality!
The smell... I grew up on a farm in Peach County Georgia. You can’t be more “Georgia” than being from Peach County. I love the Earthy smell of a freshly plowed field and the scent of peach blossoms. It’s true what they say . . . “You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl”.
The book... Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience & Redemption. Written by Laura Hillenbrand, the author of another one of my favorite books, Seabiscuit.
My piece of advice... Don’t worry. Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair. It will give you something to do but it won’t get you anywhere.
The joke… LOL! I don’t have one I dare share in a professional environment.
The exercise… Last year I took up cycling, and absolutely love it! It’s thrilling to ride down world-famous Peachtree Street early in the morning as the city is coming alive. I have finally found my exercise addiction and one with which I’ll stick.
The alternate job… Oncologist or ESPN sports commentator/side line reporter.
The song… Georgia On My Mind. The Ray Charles version, of course!
The taste… Chilled, bubbly, champagne.
