The Passions Behind the People
Each month we will be sharing the passions behind the people in the DMC Network. This month the spotlight is on Debbie Ibey, Co-owner of Arrangements Unlimited, our DMC partner in San Diego/Orange County and Palm Springs.
All I could think of was the programs we had coming up. Our entire team had met the day before for an “All hands on deck” meeting and we were set to operate more business in the next 6 weeks than we had in the history of our company. Everyone had been assigned what they were going to be doing. All of the binders we had reviewed were in that office except for the one in my car, as I had early arrivals starting on this day. As we stood in the parking lot, we did not know what we were going to do.
Finally the Fire Chief let us go into the office with hard hats and flash lights. Everything was black with soot and dripping with water. All the computers were destroyed. We were devastated. Then as Mary and I walked into the office space we shared, we saw samples of a client gift we had just found, a Courage Angel Business Card Holder. We each had one on our desk and amongst all the destruction they were sitting there untouched. Mary and I looked at each other and we knew that our business would survive and it did!
The hobby... Travel! Give me a plane ticket and I am ready to go!
The time of day... Early morning; I love to sit in the peace of a 5:30 am morning with my coffee and think about the possibility of the day.
The vice... I find it really hard to say no. I am getting better at it, but still if someone needs my help I will do everything possible to help. I am not sure that this is a vice but it is something I am working on to create boundaries.
The virtue... I am a nurturer, always the mother of the group.
The color... Blue, the blue of the ocean, the blue of the sky, or the blue of my grandchildren’s eyes
The friend... Mary Robinson, she has been my business partner for the past 18 years and my best friend for the past 26 years. People can’t believe that we work together and still have this wonderful relationship. I really don’t think of her as a friend, but as my sister!
My pet... Captain Midnight, my first horse, really a Shetland Pony who was all black with a white star on his forehead; when I was a child, I loved him more than any of my brothers or sisters.
The smell... I grew up on a farm, but my horse was kept at the stable just down the road from where I lived. I would keep my tack (saddle and bridle) in my bedroom. Even today, if I get around horses, that smell takes me back to when I was 8 years old.
The book... I love to read all kinds of books, but about 25 years ago someone gave me a book by Diana Gabaldon, called Outlander. It is an amazing story with drama, romance, and history dealing with the Scottish Uprising in the 18th century.
My piece of advice... Take one day at a time. Do the best you can on that day and then know that tomorrow you can start again and once again do your best.
The joke… LOL! The only jokes I have are from my 5 grandchildren. Not sure they would apply here.
The exercise… 8 years ago I had partial knee replacements done in both knees. The following year I did the 3 day breast cancer walk here in San Diego walking 60 miles. After that I really fell in love with walking. Not speed walking mind you, but a leisurely walk where you can really see all the beauty around you. In the last year or so I have also started meditating. This really helps put me in a good frame of mind to start my day!
The alternate job… Student, I love learning and hope to go back to school someday!
The song… Andrea Bocelli – Con Te Partiro – When I hear him sing I think, this is what God must sound like.
The taste… Dark chocolate gelato with red chili peppers.
